In 1861, Silver City reportedly had a population of 1,200. Additionally, it was home to boarding houses, saloons, four hotels and extensive stables and corrals. Silver City was an important link between the Comstock Lode mines of Virginia City, Nevada and the processing mills located near Dayton and along the Carson River.

Houmas House was built in 1840 and is connected via a carriage way to the former house on the site that was built in 1780. This home was purchased and restored in 2003 and is now privately owned. The owner lives in the plantation home with his mother and two dogs whom were married for the grand re-opening of the home. Therefore, only a few rooms of the house are tourable as some of the rooms are lived in. The gardens have also been restored.
